Mark Bangert - Project Manager

My projects bring together data science and software engineering - almost always in the cloud. Even as a project manager, I still do a lot of hands-on work and am involved in both cloud infrastructure design and the development of the actual services. My coding focus is clearly on C#, but Python also plays a significant role.

I studied physics with great passion and earned my Ph.D. at the German Cancer Research Center. After that, I remained in science for another seven years, first as a postdoc and later I was able to advance my ideas with my own small research group. That was really more than just a job to me, but when things stopped developing the way I’d imagined, it was clear that it was time for something new.

I didn't know anything about HMS before I applied. I found out about the company the old-fashioned way through a job posting. Before that, I'd been looking for potential new positions for quite some time, but during other recruitment processes, I was never really convinced that a change was the right move. With HMS, on the other hand, it quickly became clear to me that it was a good fit for me in terms of the job responsibilities and, above all, the work environment.

As someone changing careers, I had a generous training budget at my disposal. This gave me a tremendous amount of time, in addition to my actual project work, to build my foundational knowledge of software engineering and cloud technologies. Throughout this process, I received excellent support and guidance from experienced colleagues. Over time, this allowed me to take on more and more responsibility within the projects and quickly evolve from a supporting role to a leadership role. Specifically, this means that, as a Dev Lead, I now have increasing conceptual influence within the team, and as a project manager, I’m actively involved in sales-related aspects and management tasks.

As a scientist, I’ve become increasingly specialized over the course of my long career, and this niche knowledge is currently tucked away in a back corner, waiting for our sales team to come up with a radiation oncology project. That does bother me sometimes, but I also realize that many of the skills I developed as a scientist are a real asset at HMS. For example, the scientific approach to understanding and simplifying problems is incredibly helpful when designing algorithms. Thanks to my background in physics and medicine, I consistently find it easy to immerse myself in our clients’ fields. And on an interpersonal level, we at HMS aren’t all that different from a dynamic research team at a research institute.

For one thing, within project work, we ensure that employees take on roles that allow them to grow professionally. But there are also organized opportunities outside of projects: All HMS employees have a budget of one day per month that they can use freely for further education, in consultation with their department head. Various areas of expertise (including Cloud Engineering, Data Engineering, Artificial Intelligence & Business Intelligence, and Project Management) provide guidance and opportunities for exchange, connecting colleagues with similar interests. This internal program is regularly supplemented by external seminars that also provide training in soft skills relevant to the day-to-day work of software developers and consultants.
